My Soapmaking Journey
I started making my own soap years before I got involved in beekeeping. My first job out of college involved a lot of hotel stays, which as you probably know, have the worst quality soap. Most "soap" as we know it isn't even really soap, but rather chemical detergent with all the "good stuff" removed. Glycerin is extracted and sold separately at a higher price. After a couple years of hotel soap, I developed a painful case of exzema, which required a steroid creme to manage. I didn't relish the idea of using steriods indefinitely, and truth be told, I didn't realize the effect that commercial soap was having on my skin.
Then one day I went to a farmers market and bought handcrafted soap, which really helped my condition. Around the same time I watched the movie Fight Club, perhaps the only feature film to involve soapmaking, albeit with non-traditional ingredients. I was intrigued by the soapmaking process; my local community school offered a Â
